Vazhakkai (Raw Banana) Bajji /Plantain Fritters is one such popular crispy tea-time snack in India and its prepared by dipping the raw banana slices in spiced gram flour mixture and then deep fried to crispy.It can be relished with a cup of hot chai/ coffee and your favorite chutney!
Bajji is one of the very popular street side snack. Very simple and easy to do snack dish for a nice evening. It’s a very crispy and spicy snack, perfect for tea time! It is a versatile recipe and can be prepared with onions,potato,capscium,Banana Peppers,eggplant,bread and papad.
Making perfect batter is the key to get fluffy and puffy bajji/ pakora for which adding right amount of water is really important.
if it is fried and very guilt-free if it is steamed. Here are some of my favourite tea-time snacks for a rainy day — some fried and some steamed for a mix, all delicious!

Monsoon is said to be the most beautiful season of the year; the food is wonderful too! Indeed, you can make these foods all through the year, but they assume special importance at this time. Nothing quite like sitting by your window with a cup of tea and a plateful of bajji, the aroma of rainy day !
Vazhakkai Bajji | Plantain Fritters Recipe
INGREDIENTS:
1 large raw banana,thinly sliced
3/4 cup besan (gram flour)
1/4 cup rice flour
1/2 tsp ajwain (carom seeds)
1/2 tsp red chili powder
1/2 tsp ginger garlic paste
1 pinch of baking soda
1/2 cup + 2 tbsp water or add as required to make a slightly thick battter
salt as per taste
oil for deep frying
INSTRUCTIONS
- First peel, rinse and slice the plantain intp thin slices 0.2 cm thickness. Keep soaked in water to prevents from discolouring.
- In a mixing bowl take ¾ cup besan, ¼ cup rice flour, ½ tsp ajwain (carom seeds), ¼ tsp red chili powder,ginger-garlic paste,baking soda and salt as per taste.
- Add water and mix very well to a smooth batter without lumps.
- The batter should be slightly thick, so add water accordingly.
- Heat oil for deep frying in a kadai or pan.
- Dip one banana slice in the batter and coat it very well,then gently slid the batter coated slices in hot oil. fry at medium flame.
- When one side is light golden, then gently turn over the bajjis and continue to fry.Turn over a couple of times and fry till they are golden and crisp.
- Drain them on kitchen paper towels to remove excess oil. And fry the remaining banana slices in similar way.
- Serve these bajji hot with red chutney or coconut chutney along with cup of hot coffee/tea.
