South Indian Filter Coffee Using Italian Moka Pot

Looking for a way to make the best filter coffee? Here is how to make a cup of awesomeness using a moka pot or stove-top expresso maker.

A coffee decoction is brewed using moka pot which is then mixed with foamy hot milk and sugar to create a perfect cuppa.

WHAT IS INDIAN FILTER COFFEE?

South Indian filter coffee is a coffee drink made by mixing frothed and boiled milk with the infusion obtained by percolation brewing of finely ground coffee powder in a traditional Indian filter.

It is also referred to as Madras filter coffee, Madras kaapi, Kumbakonam degree coffee, Mylapore filter coffee, or Mysore filter coffee.

WHAT IS MOKA POT?

The moka pot is a stove-top or electric coffee maker that brews coffee by passing boiling water pressurised by steam through ground coffee.

WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS YOU WILL NEED?

To make this Best Filter Coffee, you just need 4 ingredients:

  • Coffee Powder – You can use any finely grounded coffee powder to make filter kappi. I have used Panduranga Filter Coffee powder.
  • Water – Add according to how strong the coffee you need
  • Milk – Usually filter coffee is prepared using full fat milk or whole milk, as it gives creamy and frothy coffee.
  • Sweetener – Here I have used granulated sugar. You can use jaggery instead of sugar, for a healthy alternative.

HOW TO MAKE PERFECT FILTER COFFEE USING MOKA POT?

Pour water into bottom chamber just below the pressure valve.

Fill the filter basket with coffee powder and level it. Then place the filter basket inside the bottom chamber.

Assemble the collecting chamber over the filter basket. Place it on the stove on the medium heat for 2-3 minutes.

Remove the pot when you hear the gurgling sound. The brewed coffee will be collected in the collecting chamber.

Heat milk in another pan until it starts boiling. Using the milk frother, whip it until is foamy.

Put required quantity of sugar into the cup. Pour the brewed decoction collected in the chamber and hot milk. Adjust the quantity of milk and decoction depending on how strong you like your coffee.

Enjoy the hot cup of filter coffee with your favorite breakfast!

SERVING SUGGESTIONS:

Filter coffee needs to be served immediately as soon as its made. You can have it just as a single beverage or serve it along with your South Indian breakfast of Idli, Dosa, Uttapam, Paniyaram, Upma, or Pongal
