This easy homemade tahini recipe is so quick to make, takes just TWO ingredients, is less expensive than store-bought, and tastes WAY better! This rich, flavor-packed vegan sauce is popular throughout the Mediterranean and the Middle East, and it can elevate any meal from kabobs to falafel , sandwiches, burgers and everything in between. Perfect served as part of mezze with some warm pita and fresh veggies too!

Make a double batch while you’re at it and store it in your fridge for several months to have on hand whenever you need it!

What is Tahini?

Do you know what tahini is? Tahini is a paste made from sesame seeds and is a staple in many cuisines, especially in the Mediterranean and Middle East. It’s vegan, gluten-free, tastes nutty, and is simple to make.

Is Tahini Healthy?

Tahini is relatively high in calcium and protein and is an excellent source of copper, zinc, iron, manganese, amino acids, and omega 3 and omega 6 oils. Those nutrients help fight inflammation and are provide great cardiovascular support. They also contribute to immune support.

Here’s a list of suggestions for how to use tahini, other than in hummus.

  • Can use as your own tahini salad dressing.
  • Turn it into a sauce. It is perfect drizzled over vegetables or meats.
  • Serve tahini next to falafel.
  • Use it in dessert like cookies, brownies or cakes.

Once you have tahini in your fridge (it lasts over a month), we bet you will find yourself adding it to a variety of dishes without direction from us!

Tahini Recipe Ingredients:

You only need THREE ingredients to make tahini.

Sesame seeds — We will lightly toast the seeds to bring out some of their natural nuttiness.

Oil — To help the tahini turn into a creamy smooth paste, we add a few tablespoons of neutral-flavored oil. A variety of oils work, try avocado oil, light and fruity olive oil, vegetable oil, and grape seed oil.

Salt is an optional ingredient, but I always use it. It just makes the tahini taste better.

Storing Tahini:

You can keep tahini covered in the refrigerator for a month, maybe a bit more. You might find that after some time in the fridge it separates, like a natural peanut butter would. All you need to do to fix this is stir it well.

Quick Homemade Tahini

This easy homemade tahini recipe is so quick to make, takes just TWO ingredients, is less expensive than store-bought, and tastes WAY better!
Prep Time 10 minutes
Total Time 10 minutes
Course Sauces
Servings 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sesame seeds
  • 2 to 4 tbsp light olive oil
  • Pinch of salt optional

Instructions

  • Add sesame seeds to a wide, dry saucepan over medium-low heat and toast, stirring constantly until the seeds become fragrant and very lightly colored (not brown), 3 to 5 minutes. Careful here, sesame seeds can burn quickly.
  • Transfer toasted seeds to a baking sheet or large plate and cool completely.
  • Add sesame seeds to the bowl of a food processor then process until a crumbly paste forms, about 1 minute.
  • Add 3 tablespoons of the oil then process for 2 to 3 minutes more, stopping to scrape the bottom and sides of the food processor a couple times. Check the tahini’s consistency. It should be smooth, not gritty and should be pourable. You may need to process for another minute or add the additional tablespoon of oil.
  • Taste the tahini for seasoning then add salt to taste. Process 5 to 10 seconds to mix it well.

Notes

  1. Hulled Sesame seeds will taste good in this recipe.
  2. Store in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to one month.
