Green Peas Pulao | Matar Pulao

Green Peas Pulao or Matar Pulao is a simple, delectable one-pot rice recipe in which basmati rice is cooked with green peas and flavorful whole spices!

It is very easy to prepare and requires minimal ingredients, it come together in 30 minutes! Serve this pulao with raita or with your favourite gravy for wholesome meal.

WHAT IS PULAO?

Pilaf, or pilau is a rice dish, or in some regions, a wheat dish, whose recipe usually involves cooking in stock or broth, adding spices, and other ingredients such as vegetables or meat, and employing some technique for achieving cooked grains that do not adhere. [WIKI]

HEALTH BENEFITS OF GREEN PEAS:

Green peas are seeds that come from a legume plant, but they are most often consumed as a starchy vegetable and It have an impressive nutrition profile.

Their calorie content is fairly low, with only 62 calories per 1/2-cup (170-gram) serving.About 70% of those calories come from carbs and the rest are provided by protein and a small amount of fat.

  • Green peas are fairly low in calories and contain several vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They’re also high in fiber and protein.
  • It is a very filling food, mostly due to the high amounts of protein and fiber they contain.
  • They have a low glycemic index and are rich in fiber and protein, all of which are important factors for blood sugar control.
  • They are rich in fiber, which benefits digestion by maintaining the flow of waste through your digestive tract and keeping gut bacteria healthy.
  • It have several properties that may help prevent and treat some chronic diseases, such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes.

HOW TO MAKE MATAR PULAO?

Wash and soak the basmati rice for 20 mins.

In a deep pan, add the ghee and oil. Once its hot, add the bay leaf, cumin seeds, cardamom, cinnamon and cloves.

Add the sliced onion and green chili and saute for 3 minutes until the onions turn transparent. Then add the ginger and garlic, saute until raw smell goes off.

Then add the green peas along with salt and saute for 2-3 minutes on medium heat.

Add the chopped cilantro, lemon juice and water, let it come to a boil. Finally add soaked rice and cook for 5 minutes in open pot.

Then reduce the flame to low, cover the pan with lid and allow to cook for 5 minutes or until the water is absorbed.

Turn off the flame and don’t open the lid for 3 minutes. Then open the lid and fluff the pulao using a fork.

Finally garnish with some more cilantro and serve with your favorite raita or curries or side dishes.

TIPS TO MAKE PERFECT PULAO:

Here are the few tips and suggestions to make perfect mint pulao at home,

  • Soak the rice for 20 mins and then drain the water. Else the rice will becomes mussy.
  • Always use rice to water ratio 1: 1 3/4 for perfect fluffy rice.
  • You can also make this pulao by replacing water with thin coconut milk to enhance taste.
  • You can also use sona masuri rice to make this pulao.
  • Adding lemon juice helps in retaining green color of green peas and make the rice fluffy.
  • Peas Pulao tastes better when ghee(clarified butter) is added.But Vegans can use either coconut oil or any vegetable oil.
  • You can use either fresh or frozen peas for this recipe.Fresh peas tastes the best.

HOW TO MAKE MATAR PULAO WITH COCONUT MILK?

You can also make this pulao by replacing water with thin coconut milk to enhance taste. To make green peas pulao with coconut milk, replace water with thin coconut milk.

HOW TO SERVE THIS PULAO ?

Serve this pulao with plain yogurt or raita like onion raita, onion-tomato raita, boondi raita. You can also serve this any of your favourite curries or side dish.

GREEN PEAS PULAO | MATAR PULAO RECIPE:

INGREDIENTS:

1 tbsp oil, I have used sunflower oil
2 tbsp ghee
1 bay leaf
1 small cinnamon stick
1 tsp cumin seeds

3 cloves
2 green chilli, slit into half

1 tbsp ginger, finely chopped
1 tbsp garlic, finely chopped
1 cups green peas, fresh or frozen
2 tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped
1 tbsp lemon juice
salt to taste
1 cup basmati rice, washed and soaked for 20 minutes
1 3/4 cup water

DIRECTIONS:
